Michael J. (Mike) Gugerty is the principal of the Gugerty Law Office. Mike has been practicing law in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area for twenty years, first at a law firm, then in house with a real estate developer and a bank, and finally started this firm.
Prior to starting his firm, Mike was Associate General Counsel at Chevy Chase Bank, F.S.B., in Chevy Chase, Maryland. During his tenure at Chevy Chase Bank, he supervised the disposition of over $700 million in commercial and residential bank owned real estate, coordinated the purchase or lease and development of dozens of branch bank sites, and developed a loan documentation program for commercial and private banking portfolios. He managed and participated in significant commercial real estate litigation, including foreclosures, deeds-in-lieu, loan workouts and bankruptcies. Before joining Chevy Chase Bank, Mike served as Counsel at the Miller & Smith Companies, a diversified real estate developer and homebuilder in the Washington, D.C. area. Mike started his legal career at Linowes & Blocher, a law firm in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he concentrated in litigation, zoning and administrative law.
Mike grew up on a farm near Walnut, Illinois, about 100 miles west of Chicago, and received a B.A. degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Prior to attending law school, Mike lived in Minnesota and Colorado, and worked as a technical writer and a sign language interpreter and tutor for deaf students. Mike moved to the Washington area in 1980 and received a J.D. degree from the Washington College of Law at American University in the District of Columbia.
Mike is a member of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Chamber of Commerce, the Bar Association of Montgomery County, the Maryland State Bar Association, and the Maryland, Virginia and District of Columbia bars. Mike is also fluent in American Sign Language.
Mike’s community activities include participation in Leadership Montgomery, a non-profit community leadership development organization. He also served on the board of directors of Hadley's Park, Inc., a non-profit corporation building fully accessible playgrounds equipped to allow children with and without disabilities to play together. Mike is a member of the board of directors of SEEC, a local organization that provides advocacy and support to enable individuals with developmental disabilities to live and work as contributing members of the community.
